If it weren’t for two specific facts, Alltel could very well get the nod as the best Wireless Broadband carrier available; however, we can’t ignore those facts. The first is that Alltel doesn’t have its own nationwide coverage. True, it has been known to brag about having the largest network in the U.S., but that’s based on agreements with other carriers, notably Sprint.
The other undeniable fact regarding Alltel is that it has been acquired by Verizon Wireless and will relatively soon, cease to exist on its own. The synergy of the two companies could ultimately be good for them and for consumers. We’ll see.
We’ve chosen to leave Alltel in the lineup at this point because they do still exist and though most Alltel customers will automatically become VZW customers, there are some areas in which Verizon Wireless must divest itself of particular holdings to comply with anti-trust provisions. Until those changes are fully defined, we can’t be sure of what will be available to a significant number of Alltel wireless customers.
Laptop Computers
For purposes of this review, the term Laptop Computer refers to a number of portable computers. For details of these devices, check out our reviews of Laptops, Gaming Laptops and Netbooks.
Pricing is an area that Alltel Wireless outshines all of the competitors. First because of flexibility. They offer four distinct plans that are tailored to different types of users. The National Wireless internet plan at $59.99 per month is the one that most nearly corresponds with the offerings of other providers. Another plan that is particularly interesting is the unique Extended Wireless internet plan which offers unlimited broadband access throughout the United States and Canada. If you frequently cross the border, this plan is a real winner.
Now in case you’re wondering, you did just see the word ‘unlimited’ in a description of a Wireless Broadband plan. While the competition charges a fortune for any data usage above 5GB per month, all of Alltel’s plans are truly unlimited! This in and of itself could be enough to push the carrier into the number one spot. We’ll be surprised if that feature isn’t lost when the service integration with VZW is completed.
Alltel is currently waiving the activation fee for wireless data cards and also is providing all of their available card models free of charge. The company imposes a $200 Early Termination Fee for contract cancellation before the agreed date.
Smartphones
Unlimited data access is available from Alltel Wireless for $30.00 in addition to the voice service charge.
Wi-Fi
There is an additional $10.00 monthly fee for unlimited Wi-Fi access.
